As spring returns to the Northern Hemisphere, fall begins to make its presence known in the Southern. With fall comes falling temperatures and an increase in sea ice on the waters surrounding Antarctica. In the Ross Sea, east of the Transarctic Mountains and north of the Ross Ice Shelf, sea ice gathers around a number of large icebergs: B-15A, B-15J, B-15K, and C-16. The two largest icebergs shown are just off the edge of the shelf (northeast of Ross island): B-15A, the large bottle-shaped piece, and B-15J, the smaller oblong between B-15A and the ice shelf. This is a true-color Aqua MODIS image from March 28, 2004.
