snow map of mid-US Nov 26-28,2001 snow map of mid-US Nov 26-28,2001

Map of snow extent left in the wake of winter storms that swept across parts of America's northern and southern plains from 26-28 November 2001. This snow map was created using a modified version of the MODIS snow algorithm using MODIS direct broadcast data acquired by the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) at the University of Wisconsin as input.

No cloud masking is done is done in this version of the snow algorithm. As a result, some areas that are cloud obscured are shown as bare land. A false color image of MODIS bands 1,4,6 is shown for comparison of snow and clouds. In this combination snow appears in dark pink. Clouds appear in white and greenish and pinkish hues of white.
