MODIS snow map of U.S. MODIS snow map of U.S.

Swath of snow left in wake of winter storm that swept across the Southern Plains to the Great Lakes on 30-31 January 2002. MODIS bands 1,4,6 (RGB) color image (top) assist in identifying snow and differentiating snow from clouds. In this color combination snow appears yellow and most clouds appear white. A modified version of the MODIS snow algorithm was applied to the data to generate the snow map (bottom). The snow map, 500 m spatial resolution, shows snow in white. Cloud masking is not applied in the algorithm. MODIS data from University of Wisconsin SSEC ( http://www.ssec.wisc.edu ).
